The Big Blue Bagel's open mic nights provide weekly source of entertainment. Open mic nights have been held at The Big Blue Bagel off and on for more than two years. In January it became a weekly event.Last Tuesday, the small deli and bar was packed with students wanting to relax, have a cold beer and listen music.

"It's the most laid-back atmosphere in Auburn," said Jeremiah Healy, manager of The Big Blue Bagel. "It doesn't get any cozier than this."

Participants are free to do whatever they want within their 10- to 15-minute time slots.

Some read poetry or play in groups with a myriad of instruments ranging from harmonicas to congas to flutes. Most, though, just play guitar and sing.

Healy said the crowd varies week to week, depending on who is playing, but the atmosphere is always calm and comfortable.

He said the open mic nights are a nice contrast to the loud bars that share space with The Big Blue Bagel in downtown Auburn.

Leroy Meadows has been playing music in Auburn for more than 20 years. He has played at the Blue Bagel before with bands like Pretty Beat Up. But, the local veteran still enjoys participating in an event usually reserved for amateurs.

"I just feel comfortable here," he said.

Despite the quiet atmosphere, other performers were not as comfortable as Meadows.

"My knees were shaking, and my mouth was dry," said Sonny Stripling, who participated in the event for the first time. "But it was a blast. I knew I'd love it."

Many of the acts play cover songs with acoustic instruments, but others play orginal music or recite poetry.

For those wanting to just sit back and watch, open mic begins at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays.
